Would you get nervous if you saw a bull dozer operator driving his giant piece of machinery and texting? How would you feel if a surgeon had a scalpel in one hand and a cell phone in the other while making an incision? As ridiculous as it sounds, people all across East Texas conduct themselves with the same amount of risk when they talk on a cell phone or text while driving. In fact, they not only put themselves at risk, they endanger the lives of others on the road. Several laws have been passed addressing cell phone use in school zones but that will solve only part of the problem. With school out and more and more young people on the road, this problem is sure to grow. It will be difficult to break some of these habits but when you really think about the stats and how many accidents are caused by distracted drivers, doesn't it make sense? We at KLTV would like to help in this cause and that is why in a few short weeks you will see a campaign addressing this issue. We call it the East Texas Hands Free Zone and the challenge is to inform and inspire drivers to make a commitment not to text or try to operate a cell phone while driving. Watch for more information soon and how you can be a part of this special movement and together we can make our roads safer and perhaps save a life making this a Better East Texas.
