TYLER, TX (KLTV) - "We're behind…and it's time to get structures and systems in place," said Shon Joseph. Joseph is, currently, associate principal of John Tyler High School. The board approved the decision to hire him as the school's new head principal.
"It's time to go to work. The kids deserve it," he said.
Superintendent Randy Reid said the district was in talks with more than 20 candidates from across the country. Those candidates were narrowed down to three, including Joseph. The final three were presented to a community screening committee for its recommendations.
We're told Joseph stood out.
"When you place some structures in place, and people get to know their roles and expectations, you raise the standards," he said.
Joseph served as associate principal for more than six weeks. Jeff Collum, interim principal and director of student services for the district said, Friday, Joseph helped create the plan for establishing a new standardized dress code at John Tyler. He also plans to implement a new ninth grade academy this fall.
"Rank does not confer privilege," said Joseph. "It imposes responsibility, and the principal is responsible for the culture, the climate, and the vision of that school."
Clyde Sanders's daughter attends John Tyler. Sanders said when he was approached to sit on the community screening committee, he gladly said yes.
"If we could just get someone to stay [at John Tyler] for the long haul and be consistent, I think we'll have a better school," said Sanders.
The school has been searching for a principal since Dr. Carol Saxenian asked to be reassigned less than year after she took the job.
"Like the bracelets we wear, I am John Tyler," said Joseph, who comes to John Tyler with nearly 15 years of educational experience, including a stint as principal of Palestine High School.
Joseph will be on hand for a John Tyler community meeting and barbeque, Thursday night. He's expected to discuss and field questions about his new plans for the school, including the new dress code policy and ninth grade academy. The meeting starts at 6 p.m. inside the John Tyler cafeteria.
