EAST TEXAS (KLTV) - It may have been a while since you've seen someone make a plain cup of coffee. With a little cream and a couple of packets of sugar, the drink will cost you approximately 50 calories. It is a far cry from some of the frothy drinks popular these days.
"Most people don't realize how calorie and fat laden these drinks can be," Trinity Mother Frances dietician Tami Lawrence says . "If they're not requesting the low-calorie version they can be raking in 400-500 calories with one beverage."
Some are even worse. Men's Health Monthly tagged some of the worst calorie and fat offenders. The 24 ounce Dairy Queen Carmel Moolatte boasts 870 calories, 24 grams of fat. Per ounce, this coffee concoction delivers one gram of fat and 4.6 grams of sugar. A large Baskin Robbins Cappuccino Blast Turtle tops that with 960 calories and 27 grams of fat.
The owner of the Downtown Coffee Lounge, Kimberly Mabry, says their highest calorie drink, the Snickers, runs around 500 calories. She prides herself on the fact that her store offers low-fat, low-calorie options for every drink.
"We can make anything with non-fat milk and if you want a plain coffee without any flavoring and with low fat milk it would be about 100 calories."
But, she says few people ever bother asking.
"Most people don't pay attention," she said. "Every once in a while we get the girl who comes in and says, 'I want a skinny, whatever it is, I want it skinny.'"
Tami Lawrence says more people should ask for skinnies.
"I think what people ought to do is do their homework, do their research," said Lawrence. "Maybe, get online and learn the nutritionals and find the best one. Be a savvy consumer."
