TYLER, TX (KLTV) - TYLER, TX (KLTV) - Gubernatorial candidate, Bill White, says that schools should be kept out of politics. White made a campaign stop in Tyler Monday.
White says the recent decisions over social studies textbooks and what should go in them became too political. White says if he is elected he would like to see a chair appointed who will run a process that reflects educator's opinions and not politicians. The former Houston mayor says the recent changes will not only hurt kids but business.
"I think it's going to hurt Texas, in the long run, in attracting businesses to our state if we are known as a state where politicians rather than professional educators decide what our kids are taught," said White.
He believes the changes made by the State Board of Education should be revisited when the new board takes office.
