Proud of East Texas: Angel Layettes
An estimated twenty thousand babies are stillborn each year in America, while another nineteen thousand babies die shortly after birth. It's a heartbreaking loss for families involved and one that leaves them unprepared for facing their loss as well as funeral preparations.
"Angel Layettes" is a non profit organization which makes beautiful gowns and caps for the tiny stillborns, in sizes unavailable in any store. Nurses dress the babies in the special clothing and present them to parents as "gifts from God". Parents say they appreciate their babies being treated as persons instead of things, in a dignified manner
Sharon and Arnold Sikes seeded "Angel Layettes" with their own money. Volunteers operate the state of the art sewing machines in the Layette Headquarters in Gresham. Angel Layettes provides layettes to over twenty hospitals in Texas, Oklahoma, Florida and Arizona and is in the process of a fund raising campaign to expand their services through the U.S. For more information go to www.angellayettes.org
