MOUNT ENTERPRISE, TX (KLTV) - Vernon Williams fought courageously through France, Holland, Belgium and Germany before a German bullet ended World War II for him. Williams had joined the Army in 1943 at the age of 19. By June of 1945 he was landing on Normandy Beach, a week after D Day.
Williams was to get in plenty of fighting during the next six months, earning a Bronze Star for saving a French civilian's life under enemy fire. Ironically he saved an American soldier's life after a German soldier led him to the wounded soldier.
But it was on February 25th of 1945 that a bullet from another German soldier almost ended Williams life and did kill his Lieutenant beside him.
Williams has always felt responsible for Lieutenant Dale's death because he thought the shot had come from another direction, since the pain from the exit wound was worse than from the entry wound. In spite of this, Williams says he feels blessed to have been able to serve his country.
