TYLER, TX (KLTV) - TYLER, TX (KLTV) - As of Wednesday, the new Texas State Veteran's Home in Tyler is officially under construction.
Local leaders and veterans broke ground on the new home, which will be built on the grounds of Camp Fannin, where many World War II vets actually began their service. This will be the eighth Texas State Veterans Home, but this one will be unique, offering cottage-style housing. Local veterans say it is comforting to have a facility like this right here in East Texas.
"It means if I ever do get to where I need constant help - I get some mighty good at home now - but it'll be a great savings to me and a great help to me," said James Holmes, a WWII veteran. "I just hope it'll be a long time before I have to use it."
The home will be paid for by the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs, and the Texas Veterans Land Board. It is scheduled to open in the fall of next year.
