Junior League Of Tyler Gives Back To Community

Thanks to the Junior League of Tyler, 23 area agencies will be able to provide much needed services in our community. The league has just handed out $269,812. The money was raised this year during its annual "Mistletoe & Magic" event as well as cookbook sales.

Incoming Junior League President Jane Coker says the Tyler/Smith County agencies benefiting will be able to help people of all ages. One of the projects receiving funding is the summer reading camp.

"We help children who are leaving the 2nd grade who are not reading quit as well as they should, or we would hope they could. This is an opportunity for us to get them excited about reading and generate in them an excitement about literature and books. It will also give them an opportunity at the end of the week to leave with about 16 books starting their own library at home," explains Coker.

Coker goes on to say, the benefit to these agencies is two fold. "The Junior League of Tyler not only gives dollars, it gives volunteers, trained volunteers. It gives us an opportunity to give back into our community the things that we've been fortunate enough to receive ourselves."

The League provides those agencies with about 100 volunteers, totaling about 5000 volunteer hours. In the Junior League of Tyler's 53 year history, it has given more than $3-million back to our community.
