HENDERSON, TX (KLTV) - It was a Mother's Day gift unlike any other. A baby girl was given a second chance at life.
In March, we brought you the story of Brynn Lewis. The five-month-old was born with a serious heart defect and has spent her entire life in the hospital, waiting for a transplant. Sunday, Brynn received a new heart.
Sharon Collins held her phone to her ear and cried, "Oh thank God, thank God. Oh, wonderful Amy, I'm so happy." She had been waiting for this phone call for nearly six months. "It's the most wonderful news I have ever heard in my life," said Collins.
Her granddaughter, Brynn Lewis, received a new heart.
Brynn was born in November and has spent every day of her life in a Dallas hospital. Last week, she was scheduled for a heart transplant, but that heart wasn't the right fit. "It was too large, and then they had to call it off and sew her back up," said Collins. Brynn's mom, Amy Lewis said, "I was more relieved that she was ok, that she was going to make it. I wasn't even that disappointed to not get the heart, because I have faith in God that wasn't the perfect heart, and He was going to have another one for her."
Lewis says the right fit came Sunday. This heart will give her daughter a second chance at life. "I thought, we get another second chance, we can pick out another coming home outfit and put her in the car seat for the first time."
Brynn's parents say they can't wait to bring their daughter home to Henderson. The community has poured out their love and support. "It opens your eyes to the priorities in life, and people have definitely shown their good side though all of this," said Christy Staneart, a family friend.
For Amy, this transplant is the ultimate Mother's Day gift. "God had everything to do with it. He planned it this way. He is always on time. It came at the perfect time, the perfect time," said Collins. Staneart added, "To be on Mother's Day, it is just the icing on the cake."
