LINDALE, TX (KLTV) - The children at Lindale's Early Childhood Center love Arch Puddington's weekly visits, especially the magic tricks that have become the center of his volunteer efforts. But it was not magic that got Puddington through the bloodiest battle of World War II; it was training, determination, and often just pure luck.
Puddington was sent into the Battle of the Bulge in 1944 as the leader of a machine gun platoon. The battle, the bloodiest of the war, lasted two months before the last of the German reserves were depleted and their air force shattered.
Puddington does not often talk about his war experiences and he hopes the children at the childhood center will never know the horrors of war as he has.
