LUFKIN, TX (KTRE) - LUFKIN, TX (KTRE) - Lufkin Police have arrested a second suspect, this time a woman, in connection to the January shooting death of a Lufkin man.

Police spokesman J.B. Smith said Kendall Thompson, 19, of Lufkin, was arrested Thursday evening on a warrant for murder in the death of Joseph Cooper, 63.

Smith said the investigation of the murder continues, and other arrests could be made.

Cooper died around 1:30 a.m. on January 19 from a single gunshot to the torso on Cotton Belt Street.

Police arrested Thompson's boyfriend, Elton "June" Gibson Jr., 19, on Thursday.

According to an arrest affidavit, a witness said Cooper was in the house when he heard gunshots outside. He then went outside and about five to 10 minutes later, Cooper was hit by a bullet.

The affidavit provided various accounts of how Thompson had been in an altercation at the residence and left the scene. She then complained to Gibson about a man shoving her in the face. The affidavit stated Thompson drove Gibson and another person back to the scene and the bullets came from the car she was driving.

The affidavit stated Gibson was arrested for a probation violation. Corp. Tom Strickland monitored his phone calls and jail visits. The affidavit detailed conversations he had with Thompson from March 13 through March 20, in which he tells his girlfriend that if "worst comes to worst she was not going down. June tells Kendall, 'I will take that.'"
