DPS Troopers Detain Car Chase Suspect

A half hour police chase on Interstate 20 Tuesday morning ended with the arrest of a North Carolina man.

It began in Canton when DPS troopers pulled Eddie Wiley Lewis (24) over for not wearing a seatbelt. Wiley fled from troopers, heading east on I-20 into Smith County. Troopers deployed stop spikes in the middle of the roadway to halt Lewis's car.

Tyler and DPS troopers apprehended the suspect and discovered a pistol and nine pounds of marijuana inside his Nissan Pathfire.

"The pursuit lasted 32 miles, recalls Sargeant Robert Strickland with Tyler DPS. "The vehicle was driving in and out of traffic on the shoulder." No other drivers were injured.

Lewis was apparently en route from Dallas--it's possible he was heading home to North Carolina. He's now charged with evading arrest, possession of marijuana and possession of a firearm. Lewis is being held in Smith County on four bonds totaling $20,000.
