East Texas congressman proposing immigration bill

EAST TEXAS (KLTV) - East Texas State Representative Leo Berman says he will introduce immigration legislation like the law recently approved in Arizona.

Berman said through an aid that he will focus on the provision which would require law enforcement to check the immigration status of anyone they suspect is in the US illegally.

"As you may know, I have introduced several immigration bills, as well as an E-Verify bill, in past legislative sessions; however, none were allowed out of committee to receive a House floor vote," explained Berman. "In the 2011 session, I intend to introduce immigration and law enforcement legislation that is similar to Arizona's SB 1070. It will include wording to allow all law enforcement agencies to legally deal with illegal aliens. Additionally, I am having a bill drafted that will support new election law, requiring candidates for vice president and president to document their eligibility with the Texas secretary of state (as a natural born citizen of the USA), before being allowed on the ballot in the state of Texas."

Opponents of the legislation say that the bill will face a very different reality in Texas than it will in Arizona.
