TYLER, TX (KLTV) - An East Texas student is one of 19 students in the nation chosen for the All USA Academic First Team.
Luke Bazil, 21, a sophomore at Tyler Junior College went up against more than 1,500 students that were nominated for this award, which is based on service and academic excellence.
Bazil is active in the Phi Theta Kappa honor society, volunteered more than 4,000 service hours, and saved a 9-year-old autistic girl.
"It means a lot to us as an institution to know our students has been recognized nation-wide in something like this," said Fred Peters, with TJC. "This is the 13th All USA team member TJC has had over the years and that is more than any college in the country, so we are proud of that."
Bazil received his award Monday in Seattle, and was given a $2,500 scholarship.
