LONGVIEW, TX (KLTV) - Gunfire and gray riders on horseback were sighted today in Longview, re-enacting one of the old west's most famous bank robberies.

It was Dalton days today at the Longview fairgrounds rodeo arena. On May 23rd 1894, Bill Dalton and his gang rode into Longview and robbed the bank, killing several people in a wild shootout. The event is sponsored by the Gregg county historical museum, and re-enacted by professionals who take the accuracy of their portrayals very seriously.

"You know when people talk about the old Dalton gang they don't really realize that it really happened right here in east Texas and it really gratifies us to be a part of it and to live the old west as it really was" says re-enactor Bobby Connally who portrays Bill Dalton.

The historical account says the leader of the gang, Bill Dalton, was killed by lawmen 2 weeks later in Oklahoma.
