LONGVIEW, TX - Pine Tree ISD has named Mrs. Kim Chatman as the principal of a new high school that will open in the fall of 2010. EXCEL: a high school of choice will open in what is now the 700 wing of the current PT High School in Longview, Texas.
"This new school for students in 9th-12th grade underscores Pine Tree's commitment to creating options for students that meet their unique academic and life needs," said Marian Strauss, Superintendent for Pine Tree schools.
The mission of the new school incorporates the essence of what Pine Tree has always maintained explains Principal Chatman: "In partnership with PTISD and the community of Longview, Texas, EXCEL will continue the tradition of EXcellence, Compelling Extraordinary Learners." She explains that classes will include the four core subject areas of English, math, science and social studies, and a limited number of elective classes, all offered through a computer-based curriculum. Students are still required to meet the state standards for the TAKS tests, and diplomas issued from EXCEL High School will be accredited by the state of Texas. Graduation ceremonies are to be held at the end of each semester.
Prior to working at Pine Tree, Ms. Chatman was a teacher in Longview ISD for nine years; she has served as an assistant principal at Pine Tree High School for the last two years.
"I would like to thank Pine Tree ISD for affording me the opportunity to serve our district in such a capacity as this. The new high school will allow our district to continually meet the needs of all students on a broader scale. Although the paths that students take may vary, their ultimate goal remains the same: GRADUATION!"
