LUFKIN, TX (KTRE) - Angelina County Sheriff's deputies are wearing black bands over their badges this week in memory of one of their sergeants.

Known as Sgt. Stripling to her colleagues, Sheriff Kent Henson says it appears a heart attack is what killed Dawn Denise Stripling-Searson, 48, of Lufkin.

She worked at the sheriff's office for more than 17 years in various positions, most recently as a patrol officer.

"It's just like losing one of your family members," Henson said. "I mean, because we've been together, the whole group of us, we've been together now for our whole tenure since we've been there and Dawn is one of those type people that everyone was her friend."

Henson said neighboring law enforcement agencies will work in Angelina County Wednesday so that the department can attend Stripling's funeral.

Visitation is Tuesday in Lufkin at Carroway-Claybar Funeral Home from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Funeral services will also be there Wednesday at 10 a.m.
