Investigators: Longview 'suspicious package' was regular piece of mail

UPDATE: 04/02/2010 06:07PM: According to Amanda McMurray, a U.S. postal inspector, the 'suspicious package' found on top of a Longview mail box was a regular piece of mail. ATF and authorities were called to the scene because the package did not have a return address on it.

LONGVIEW, TX (KLTV) - According to Longview police, another suspicious postal box has been discovered in Longview on Judson Road.

The suspicious package was found on top of a mailbox on the corner of Judson Road and H.G. Mosley. Authorities say it has no return address on it.

Judson Road has been blocked off from H.G. Mosley to Eden Drive. All the businesses in the area have been evacuated.

ATF, fire officials and police are on the scene.

The following information was released by the Longview Police Department:

Officers arrived and located a "flat rate" style United States Postal Service shipping box on top of a metal mail drop box. The shipping box appeared suspicious to officers, so the U.S. Department of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms (ATF) was notified.

In light of previous incidents in Longview and around East Texas involving explosive devices left near or in mailboxes, the ATF responded to the scene to remove the package. It is entirely possible the suspicious package could be improperly returned mail, but necessary precautions were taken and the area immediately around the scene was evacuated.
