Tyler, Longview salute East Texas women

LONGVIEW/TYLER, TX (KLTV) - Celebrating women's contributions in history was part of gatherings in Longview and Tyler Thursday.

It was the 23rd Annual Women in Longview day at Maude Cobb Activity Center.

The theme this year was Writing Women Back into History. KLTV's Joan Hallmark was a speaker at the event which honors the contributions of women to history, both nationally and locally.

"Our goal is to complete the four 'E's: We want to educate, enhance, empower and edify women," said Donita Utzman, the event chair. "We do meet about six months planning this event."

The event coincides with National Women's History Month.

In Tyler, it was a salute to women of courage. Women in Tyler honored seven women Thursday at the Tyler Rose Garden Center.

Among this years honorees were Dianna Jackson, who became the first black Assistant Chief of the Tyler Police Department and Ivette Allen, a Tyler mother who served in both Operation Desert Storm and the current war in Iraq.
