Tyler mayor hopes actions will inspire volunteering

TYLER, TX (KLTV) -

TYLER, TX (KLTV) - Meals on Wheels recipients may have answered their door Wednesday to find a new delivery volunteer handing over a home cooked meal.

Tyler Mayor Barbara Bass did her part in a national effort coined Mayors for Meals. Elected officials from 23 cities took part to show support for seniors in the community. The event seeks awareness of senior hunger and urges those able to volunteer.

"We have a lot of senior citizens that cannot get out and get something to eat they can't cook for themselves for various reasons so this is a unique program in that it meets a need in our community," said Bass.

Meals on Wheels serves nearly 3.500 meals each week day to elderly and disabled across East Texas. Last year they delivered close to 1,000,000 meals.
