Put me in coach

LONGVIEW, TEXAS (KLTV) - For Kali Behrens, it happened in the blink of an eye.

"There was a girl that was headed home," said Behrens, "She came into home and took me out, and I just heard my knee pop, and that was it."

The play at the plate left Behrens with a torn ACL and a decision to make, stop playing and face surgery or continue, and risk further damage.

"I think about that," said Behrens, "But it is not enough to keep me from playing. I have had a lot of people tell me about ACL injuries, and surgery was an option, but I just want to keep playing."

"To see her out there, it is such a great thing," said Letourneau head coach Mike Van Brocklin, "Especially at a position like catcher, that uses her knees so much, it is really a testament to her character and toughness."

A brace now covers her knee, the same knee used to squat, game after game and practice after practice.

"My kneecap still slides out of place. Without the ACL, it moves and it is like bone on bone. It hurts, it does, but after a while it just goes away."

Behrens could have hung it up, many athletes would.

She says no way, it will take more than a torn muscle, to keep her away.

"I look at it this way," said Behrens, "It could have been worse, I could have broken my leg and not even been able to walk, at least now I can play."

"It really is remarkable how she is playing," said Van Brocklin, "I can't wait to see her next year when she is full strength."
