Real life civics lesson

LONGVIEW, TX (KLTV) - It was a real life civics lesson. Monday, the 2010 Census Tour stopped at South Ward Elementary School in Longview to teach students about the census and why it is important to have their family counted.

The kids got coloring books and other materials explaining how everyone is counted.

The census van is one of 13 criss-crossing America, stopping at schools, malls, and local events to encourage participation in this year's census.

"I learned that the census only comes around 10 years, and that the census counts how many people are in America," said Samuel Reese, a 5th grader. "With the census, it helps you know whether they need to build new roads, new schools, and playgrounds for the kids."

A census spokesperson said every percentage point increase in the census response rate saves taxpayers $85,000,000 nationally.
