Lock and Load: Stress Relief 101

By Coleman Swierc

TYLER, TEXAS (KLTV) - It didn't take long for Charles Hanger to fall in love with sport shooting

"I like blowing stuff up," said Hanger.

While some people swing a nine iron to relax, others wield a 12 gauge.

"It really gives us something fun to do," said shooter Orville Winover, "I was looking for something towards the end of my career to give more time to the things I like to do and shooting is one of them."

"It simulated hunting conditions, and I thought it looked like fun," said Hanger, "So I came out here (to Rose City Flying Clays) and signed up, and fell in love with it immediately."

Sometimes they miss, most times they don't, and for every hit, a shot of adrenaline.

"It comes together perfectly, and boom, there it goes," said Hanger.

"When you pull the trigger, it is a jolt," said Monique Dorsey, owner of Rose City Flying Clays in Tyler, "To be able to see the clay, and follow it, then see it blow into a million pieces, it is a great release."

The sports itself bears no bias, some of the best shooters you'll find, play mom on the side

"It is enabling," said Dorsey, "I wish more women would shoot, it is very liberating."

So whether for fun or for sport, several times a week, you will find shooters, blowing away one clay after another trying to perfect the body, and the mind.

"You only play against yourself," said Winover, "It is a great way to learn about yourself, and to do so at a great place and for a great price, you can't beat that."
