LOUISVILLE, KY (WAVE) - A Portland man is behind bars after allegations that he sexually assaulted a 5-year-old child. Melvin Lee Bright is being held in Louisville, awaiting extradition to Indiana. That's where Clark County authorities say he is accused of molesting a girl in Jeffersonville.

The victim's mother, Amanda Blair, says the allegations date back to January, when Bright helped the family out by watching the children.

A probable cause affidavit from the Clark County Prosecutor's office indicates Blair said she received several calls from Bright's family members, wanting to know about Bright's involvement with children.

According to the affidavit, those callers included Bright's own daughter and niece, who claimed they were "sexually abused and molested by Mr. Bright for years."

That's when Blair questioned her own children.

"I'm humiliated and embarrassed," said Blair, a mother of three. "I feel like I didn't protect her. Everybody that knew him thought the world of him."

An investigation and police interview revealed that Blair's 5-year-old daughter was touched inappropriately. A February polygraph test with Melvin Lee Bright concluded he gave "specific reactions, indicative of deception" during the examination.

Blair says she believes there could be other cases.

"I believe that there are others out there and the fear of coming forward or the fear of what could happen to them because of the family members, the fear of not being believed stopped so many people," Blair said. "Nobody is going to believe them. Everybody likes him."
