Firefighters battle car, structure fire in Smith County

SMITH COUNTY (KLTV) - It only took a little wind to turn a backyard brush fire into flames shooting more than 25-feet in the air.

It happened around 3:45 Thursday afternoon south of Whitehouse off of Highway 110 in Smith County.

Deverne Sharp watched as fire fighters from Troup and Whitehouse put out the flames on what was left of a storage building.

Sharp says she started a small fire of pine needles and leaves in her backyard and left to stop by Dairy Queen. When she returned, her backyard shed was in flames, and the El Camino she hoped to restore was destroyed.

Smith County fire marshals say the fire damaged close to $5,000 worth of property.

They also stress never to leave a fire unattended as wind can double a fire's size in less than a minute.
