MARSHALL, TX (KLTV) - A gruesome discovery was made in the Marshall area Wednesday morning. Police say a truck driver spotted a dead man's body near Jefferson Street and Tolivar Road in north Marshall around 6:30 a.m.

Combing every inch of ground, police were looking for any little piece of evidence surrounding the area where the body of 48-year-old Dan Tatum of Marshall was found.

"To preserve any type of evidence we cordoned off the entire block area from one intersection to the next and our officers were scouring that area to determine any physical evidence there to be found," said Marshall's Assistant Chief of Police, Leland Benoit.

According to the witness account, the dump truck driver was hauling his load down the road when he noticed a man's body lying in the ditch. When he got out to render aid, he found that the man was dead from an apparent gunshot wound.

Tatum was shot at least once in the upper body, police believe. Police also say Tatum has no record, and his body was found in an area that is wooded and lightly traveled, with no homes, which could mean Tatum may have been dumped there.

"There's no one in that area to have been potential witnesses," said Leland.

Police marked several possible pieces of evidence and even took tire tracks, hoping something could shed light on what happened. Marshall police are calling it a homicide. But the motive and who is responsible remain a mystery.

Investigators ordered an autopsy to determine the exact cause of death. Police say they still need your help. If you have any information, call Marshall Police.
