We first met Army Pfc. John Mason 6 weeks ago, while home on leave. Now on his way to the war in Iraq, his sister had one last phone call to wish him well. A fifth grade class in Tatum, including John's nephew, all wrote letters that they hope will get to him safely. For these little ones, war is an unfamiliar term, one that Mason's nephew has asked him about before. And we sometimes forget how war effects, and hurts, even the youngest of us. And they understand more than we give them credit for. In the fullness of time, they may look back on this day and these letters, and remember it was men like John Mason. The class plans to continue writing to Mason and other troops until they come home.
