The flurry of excitement over the production of Extreme Makeover Home Edition has started to die down but it certainly left a mark on many east Texans. We received great support for our news coverage of the event but what truly made it an event was how east Texans responded when the call for help went out. So this was an exciting Hollywood like experience but now that the dust has settled what happens next. And I am speaking not of what happens next to the Carr family but what happens next to everyone who helped out or wanted to help out. The producers not only brought the show to east Texas but they also laid down a challenge for each of us to consider what we – absent of a big production camera – can do to assist those in our midst that need help. Are there people in our neighborhood, family or even strangers that obviously need a helping hand? Perhaps human compassion was awakened during the makeover experience and we can all aggressively look for someone to help. We don't need a big production team, dozens of professionals or even a bus, we only need a smile and genuine interest in our fellow man. So the challenge is there, look for someone that is struggling and reach out to demonstrate some life changing compassion and you will make this a Better East Texas.
