TYLER, TX (KLTV) - The 16-year-old victim, who will not be identified, said she no longer feels safe in her own neighborhood.

She took off for a walk in the Brookhaven, Timberlane area around 11:30 Sunday morning.

She told us she enjoys taking photographs and was hoping to snap a few shots while she was out.  What started out as a peaceful walk, soon turned into something much more frightening.

"I don't want to be outside for that long because I'm afraid he's going to drive by again and find out where I live," she said.

Officer Don Martin with the Tyler Police Department said a drove up behind her and slowly followed her.

"[A] white male basically said, ‘Can I give you a ride?'" recounted Martin. "She turned it down, and then he started coming on to her."

"I said, ‘No.  I'm fine'," the 16-year-old explained. "He said, ‘Well, I'm not. I'm horny.'"

The victim said she was "freaked out."

Just last week, a memorial service was held for California 17-year-old, Chelsea King.  King was brutally murdered several weeks ago.  Her body was found in a shallow lakeside grave.

Amber Dubois, 14, went missing from the same area a year ago.  Authorities arrested convicted sex offender, John Gardner.  They believe he is involved in both cases.

"We certainly don't want that to happen to anyone in this area," said Martin.

Martin said the suspect told our victim he lived nearby and wanted to have sex with her at his home.  He asked her to get into his truck.

The victim said she turned and headed off in the opposite direction.  Fortunately, there was a group of neighborhood boys nearby.

One of them happened to be Jeff Hobbs' stepson.

"He stood up and the man took off," said Hobbs.  Hobbs called police who came and searched the entire area.  They did not find the man, or a truck matching the description.

"Every time a vehicle drives by, we look at it," said Hobbs. "It's really an eye-opener when it happens in your neighborhood."

Instead of looking through her view finder, the 16-year-old victim spent Monday afternoon looking at local registered sex offenders online.

"I just hope that he's caught and doesn't ever come find me again," she said.

Officer Martin said Tyler police are also checking the local sex-offender database for anyone matching the following description:

A thin to medium build, white male, in his mid 50's to mid 60's.  He has balding, white hair, was clean-shaven, and was not wearing glasses.  The man was driving an older model, white Toyota regular-cab pick-up truck.

Anyone with information related to a person matching this description driving this type of vehicle is urged to contact the Tyler Police Department at 903-531-1000.

The John Tyler Lions always seem to look sharp in their uniforms. But thanks to East Texas lawyer Keith Miller, the Lions will look better and play safer. Helmets that advertise lowering the impact of hits, and possibly reduce the amount of concussions, come with a hefty price-tag. Miller's donation of 7,500 dollars, will go to help the lions cover that cost. "Keith Miller's been a big sponsor of John Tyler High School football program for years now.  I know it's...More >>
