TYLER, TX (KLTV) - Carter BloodCare needs your help. Although blood supplies in our area were just fine, the Tyler center recently shipped blood to another Texas center, depleting local supplies.

"We had the Extreme Texas Makeover last month which was great," said Kim Peddy, with Carter BloodCare. "We had some great collections from that, but we need East Texans to come out and continue to donate."

"I work in surgery, and people need blood when they get in accidents and I think it's the right thing to do," said donor Michelle Cook. "We've had times when we would have to postpone cases because they didn't have blood for heart procedures so it's very important."

"Right now we need East Texans to go to their local centers - we've got centers in Tyler, Longview, Marshall, Mt. Pleasant and Lufkin - and donate blood," said Peddy.

"The first time I donated was in Jacksonville at the high school and I needed my parents' permission to do it," said Cook.

"Carter BloodCare serves 56 counties and when any of them get low on their blood supply we in East Texas try to help them out," explained Peddy.

"My mom's been a donor for a long time," said Cook. "We always come together."

"You can donate every 56 days...every donation can save up to three lives," said Peddy. "There's lots of things you get from donating blood. You get a cholesterol get your blood pressure's almost like getting a mini-physical. And, about five days after you donate blood, you can go online and look at all of your stats."

Carter BloodCare is offering free Extreme Makeover: Home Edition t-shirts with a food and blood donation through March.
