Sheriff responds to Smith County's new jail proposal

TYLER, TX (KLTV) - Yet another proposal is on the table to build a new Smith County jail.

The $29,000,000 plan was presented to Smith County Commissioners Thursday.

Precinct One Commissioner Jeff Warr developed the plan which would add $.2 per $100 valuation to the tax rate.

The plan would add 384 beds to a new 75,800 square foot facility near Loop 323 and Highway 69.

Sheriff J.B. Smith says it is direly needed for the simplest of reasons.

"Where I'm needing more space is for maximum security people, murder, rape, robbery, armed robbery, multiple offenses, type of individuals who are harmful to the public," explained Smith. "These are the type of people that I really need a big facility for so we're hoping that the public will help us this time, and build a jail."

The plan could be placed on the May ballot if approved.

Smith also says he needs a new infirmary to treat inmates rather than risk moving them to area hospitals.
