LHS speech, debate showcase draws state, community leaders

LINDALE, TX - On March 1 the nationally recognized Lindale Speech/Debate team hosted a public showcase with several state and community leaders in attendance.

State Rep. Tommy Merritt, Rep. Bryan Hughes, J.D. Hale from Senator John Cornyn's office, Lindale Mayor Jim Mallory, Lindale city council members, Hide-A-Way Lake Mayor Duane Spaeth, Hide-A-Way Lake city council members and Lindale ISD school board trustees all came to witness the award-winning team in action.

Also in attendance were Smith County Constable Dennis Taylor, Superintendent Stan Surratt, Assistant Superintendent Carolyn Todd and Deputy Superintendent Jamie Holder.  Former Lindale debater and national award winner Philip Hayes came to support his former teammates.

National and state speech and debate qualifiers presented the showcase to approximately 130 guests.  As part of the showcase, students created an action plan to help Ethiopia combat its drought problems. 

The LHS speech/debate team was recently featured in an issue of the National Forensic League's magazine The Rostrum and the team has been recommended by the NFL to be one of the schools featured in a documentary created by a New York production company.

Lindale High School has competed at University Interscholastic League's state competition for the past 16 years and at National Forensic League's National competition for the past ten years. The public showcase is part of an international competition the LHS speech/debate team is involved in through the United Nations - People Speaks.
