LONGVIEW, TX (KLTV) - Almost forgotten in the last two weeks is the continued suffering by the people of earthquake ravaged Haiti, and an east Texas medical team has just returned from helping people there. Emergency surgery and medical care in Haiti is still desperately needed. Longview doctor and team surgeon Robert Shirley just came back from his 8-day trip with a medical team assembled by Global operations division international.

"When we got there within hours we were operating taking care of patients and problems that they had that had just been sitting around and accumulating, they didn't have any surgical staff as far as general surgeons go and they needed somebody to fill the void and we just happened to show up" says Shirley.

The 14 member team of nurses and surgeons treated several hundred people, but nothing could prepare them for what they saw.

"There were people that came in with long term wounds and things that obviously had not been treated, lots of everyday medical care, hernias , appendectomy's, perforated ulcers, chronic run of the mill everyday health problems still continue to happen, they're going to have problems for years to come they don't have water purification they don't have sanitation" Shirley says.

The effort was made possible through volunteers and the mission of Global.

"Because there was a need and that's the reason we organized , because there was a need" says Global CEO Lee Lester.

The faces, they'll never forget, and hope they made a difference in the lives of a still struggling people.

"Even though they had lost everything they still seemed to be upbeat and happy and still seemed to have their faith" Shirley says.

The entire effort by global was funded by donations and teamed by volunteer doctors and nurses.
