SPRING HILL, TX (KLTV) - An East Texas 7th grader who is battling leukemia gets a birthday surprise unlike any other. Makayla Thrasher's classmates are making sure she does not battle cancer alone.

"I was really surprised!" Makayla laughed.

For weeks, Makayla's fellow classmates at Spring Hill Junior High and Middle School have raised money to help her with medical bills.

"We're just happy to represent her and help her fight against her cancer," said Audrey Collier.

What better day to give her the donation than on her 13th birthday? For Makayla the birthday gifts couldn't have come at a better time.

"It's amazing how much they're doing," said Makayla.

Just two days before Thanksgiving, she was diagnosed with leukemia. For 21 days she was in the hospital and underwent eight surgeries, but still she perseveres.

"Makayla is just amazing," said her mom, Sarah Thrasher. "She is so much my strength! She has really had a hard year."

"She has leukemia and she still comes to school smiling like she's fine," said Parker Fiscus. "It just shows that she has a lot of heart and she's not going to give up and her fight is what it's all about."

To show their support, students are decked out in their "Friends 4 Makayla" t-shirts.

"I feel happy and I'm glad that their all supporting me through all of this," said Makayla.

"We want to make her fight is worth while and just let her know that we care and she's not by herself and she's supported by her fellow students," said Parker.

Awesome support from a school turned family.

"As long as you pray and everyone keeps praying then I know I can get through this," said Makayla.

She says the best part of her birthday is that she is a teenager now. The junior high and the middle school campus combined raised nearly $2,000 for Makayla.
