Longview Hospital hosts annual heart fair

LONGVIEW, TX (KLTV) - It was a diamond anniversary to be remembered, as one East Texas hospital went all out, promoting health awareness and putting on a fun event for those whose lives they've touched.

You would have thought it was a constant aerobics class in the Maude Cobb activity center today, with dances going on everywhere, but this was a celebration. Good Shepherd Medical Center's 75th birthday, and their 22nd annual Fair of the Heart.

"About 60 hospitals nation-wide will actually dance today for their heart, combating heart disease which is the number one killer of heart patients and stroke is number two," said Good Shepherd representative Gina Terry.

Along with screenings and health information, blood pressure and body fat tests, those who attended were urged to get active, to get the heart pumping.

"We like the entertainment for one thing and of course then there's the literature," said 90 year old Jim Ross,"I'm 90 years old and I'm very health conscious."

"I'm not old but as I get older I do feel like we should be conscious of our health and the need for physical exercise. I've thoroughly enjoyed it," said fair visitor Phyllis Lomax.

From clogging to belly-dance, anything to exercise the heart muscle was encouraged.

"Oh man this is the best one I have attended this has been great," said visitor Shirley Powell.

It's preventative medicine, knowing that a healthy heart means less trips to the doctor.

"It's never too late to start and that's what this is about today, diabetes is on the rise, obesity is on the rise and all these things lead us to an unhealthy heart." Terry says.

They hope for another 75 years, to help people be healthy.
