TYLER, TX (KLTV) - During the Battle of the Bulge in Belgium in December 1944, Jack McElroy was taken prisoner of war by the Germans. Fearing his captors might cut his finger off to get his class ring, McElroy dropped his ring in the snow. The Germans took his watch and billfold, but didn't see the ring. McElroy remained a POW for six months. There was so little to eat in the POW camp, McElroy says he could think of nothing else than food.
Ironically, McElroy was called back to active duty for the Korean War but stationed in Germany where he began a search for his ring to no avail. Many years after the war, McElroy learned that the 99th Division was working with a group from Belgium called the "Diggers" who look for lost items from the Battle of the Bulge. Although the Diggers have promised to look for McElroy's lost ring, their letters say it is "like looking for a needle in a haystack." At this date the ring remains lost in the deep forests of Belgium.
