Church Fire Stopped in it's Tracks

A Tyler church caught fire Tuesday night when lightning, according to witnesses, hit the bell tower.

The First Christian Church at the Loop and Broadway, suffered smoke damage in the halls and sanctuary. An office with copy machines, computers, and the phone system swithboard was destroyed in the fire.

Employees at the Subway across the street saw the flames and called 911 just before 10PM.

Reverend Jeff Wilson says the Fire Department saved much of the building through quick action. "We lost this room and we have smoke damage. But, there's a good chance if they had not been here and responded and done the work they did, we could have lost this wing or a major portion of the church."

Fortunately, no one was injured in the fire, and most of the permanant damage was limited to the one office.
