KILGORE, TX (KLTV) - An East Texas student is facing disciplinary action for bringing a BB gun to school. The gun was found Thursday at Kilgore Intermediate School for 4th and 5th graders. Parents say they don't know how this could happen.

"To me it's unacceptable because someone wasn't watching that little kid before he even made it into the school," said Misty Simmons.

"It makes me scarred, real scared because it could have been a 25, 38 (gun)," said Edward Petty, who has a granddaughter in the 4th grade at Kilgore Intermediate

He commends the school for getting the situation under control.

"They usually stay on top of things pretty well," said Petty. "I'm proud of what they do. They have a tough job trying to do the things that some of the parents are supposed to do and they don't do."

The school said that the student brought a non-functioning BB gun to school to show off to his friends. That's when one of the students told the teacher about the gun.

"You've got to see what your children do and that parent apparently didn't watch and some how this kid walked out of the house with a BB gun," said Simmons.

She has four boys. She says her 8-year-old has a BB gun, but he had brought it to school, there would have been consequences.

"I would have beat my child!" said Simmons.

Fortunately, no one was hurt and folks we talked to say it all goes back to home training.

"I don't think it's the little kids fault," said Simmons. "I think it's the parents fault. I mean, it's your responsibility, not that 9-year-old child's."

"That's part of your up growing," said Michael Magbziak, a Kilgore resident. "You got to watch your kids!"

School officials say the student will be placed in either in-school or out-of-school suspension. Kilgore Intermediate says they sent students home with notes to parents about the incident.
