Dewhurst visits East Texas

TYLER, TX (KLTV) - Texas Lieutenant Governor, David Dewhurst, visited East Texas Tuesday to deliver a message about the importance of job creation in the health care field.

Dewhurst toured the biomedical research lab at U.T. Health Science Center at Tyler. The lab has received $70-million in research grants in the past five year. He highlighted the importance of the research being done and discussed the need for more doctors and nurses.

"Right now, we have a shortage of about 22,000 nurses in Texas," said Dewhurst. "So from the point of workforce development. Literally, if we could just graduate more, there is a need right now. 22,000 jobs waiting."

Senator Kevin Eltife was also at the conference. He praised Dewhurst for the money he put in the budget for the academic center at U.T. Health Science Center.
