"Heart" of the Team

By Coleman Swierc

TATUM, TEXAS (KLTV) - There's not much that can bring Tatum Head coach Brett Carr to tears, but not coaching is one of them.

"I don't want to cry, I am not that kind of guy."

In a season he will never forget, Carr almost lost the ultimate battle, the one for his life.

And it began after a game in late December...

"I asked my wife to take me to the hospital, and about half way there," said Carr, "We realized that we needed to get there as fast as we could."

The resulting trip to the hospital revealed Carr had suffered a heart attack.

"You start thinking about kids, and about the important things of life, it definitely got scary."

Hours after successful surgery, and during the wee hours of the night, Carr, could only think of one thing

"When would be the first game that I can make and get back to? That was all I could think about."

Motivation for recovery would soon follow.

"My team came back to the hospital, and just seeing their faces made me want to come back even more."

Assistant coach Marcus Clark would act as head coach during Carr's absence…until the beginning of district when Carr, found his way back to the bench

"One of the kids today, said coach, 'that first night that you walked into the gym at Chapel Hill, that is why we beat them,'" said Carr.

"Seeing him come out to the gym that first time, it was something that moves you," said Eagles guard Dylan Starling, "That motivates you to do better, to go harder, it was just a warming spirit that came in."

Through it all, Carr says he has embraced not only his new look on life, but also on the game of basketball.

"He pratices what he preaches, I can tell you that," said Clark, "And he wanted to show them that no matter what happens you can bounce back from adversity, you just have to keep fighting and do what you can."

"When you have health, and you have people around you and care about you, that is far more important that wins and losses," added Carr.

And this season, will go down, as the win of a lifetime.

Carr and the Eagles have already clinched a playoff spot, and will face Bullard on Tuesday, the winner will claim the district title.
