School: Elementary student brings loaded gun to class

JONESBORO, AR (KAIT) – A student is in trouble with the law after school officials found a loaded gun at school. It happened at Westside Elementary School in Arkansas.

According to Westside Superintendent Dr. James Best, an elementary age school kid brought a loaded gun to school.

Best says another student alerted a classroom teacher around 7:55 Monday morning that the student had a gun at school. The teacher immediately went to the student in question, confronted the student, and the student gave the gun to the teacher.

Dr. Best says within 2-5 minutes the school staff and administrators had possession of the gun, the student in question, and witnesses. Best says the school did not go into lockdown because the incident had been quickly controlled and isolated.

The Craighead County Sheriff's Department is on campus at this hour conducting interviews and investigating the incident.

Dr. Best said the child will be punished according to the school policy, but did say the school was still investigating.
