Church holds worship outside burned sanctuary

TYLER, TX (KLTV) - Their building was destroyed in an act of arson last week, but members of an East Texas church did not let that stop them from coming together to worship on a cold, windy day.

With song and with prayer, members of the Clear Spring Missionary Baptist church came together on Sunday like they always do, but this time to worship outside their burned church.

"It was very important for this church family and to this congregation to meet here today on these grounds at this time," said Clear Spring pastor Brandon Owens. "If we have to continue for 6 months to a year to have church out here on the ground , that's exactly what we're going to do."

And they sent a direct message to those responsible for the fire.

"Maybe you have damaged the building, but you have not hurt the congregation," Owens said.

For many it's not only the loss of the building, but the bibles, hymnals, pictures and memories of their family through the years.

"It's very difficult, you know. You want to smile, but sometimes you can't hold back the tears" said church deacon Benny Woods.

Practicing biblical principle, they will be strong and of good courage, they believe the best is still to come.

"This building is dead, but we'll rise again, because you know you're going to overcome," Woods said.

For the time being the congregation of Clear Springs Missionary will be allowed to meet on Sundays at Mission Ships in Garden Valley. They plan to rebuild.
