3rd UPDATE: Church fire in Wills Point not arson case

Posted by Joe Terrell

UPDATE (1:53 p.m.):  KLTV is on the scene of this morning's small fire at Wills Point International Outreach Church.  Pastor Michael Williams says the fire was a small one that burned about a three foot patch of carpet under a pool table in the upstairs youth area of the church.  Pastor Williams says it was put out quickly, and it appears it was deliberately set by one or two children.  Church services were underway in another part of the building when members of the congregation began smelling smoke.  An investigation discovered the fire under the pool table.   ATF agents, already in the area investigating other fires, arrived but soon after turned the case over to the Van Zandt County Fire Marshal.  Williams says the fire is not related to the recent string of church arsons.  Russell Memorial Methodist Church in Wills Point was destroyed by arson February 4th.  KLTV will have more on the story tonight on East Texas News Weekend at 10.

UPDATE: The fire at Wills Point International Outreach Church is not related to the recent rash of church arson fires according to church pastor, Michael Williams.  Williams says it appears to be "an act of vandalism."  ATF agents, who were already in the area, have responded and referred the case to the Van Zandt County Fire Marshal's office.  The fire started around 11:15 this morning, during Sunday morning church services.  KLTV has a crew at the scene and will bring you more developments tonight on East Texas News Weekend and throught the remainder of the day at kltv.com.

UPDATE: KLTV 7 crews are on the way to Wills Point where there is a report of a church fire on Lake Drive.  Witnesses in the area have told KLTV they have seen a fire truck and several ATF vehicles driving to the scene within the last area.  A man working at a gas station in the area says it is the Wills Point International Outreach Church.
Church officials say the fire happened during Sunday morning services.  They categorize it as a "small" fire.  The fire is out.  ATF is on the scene.

"I really loved wearing the orange when I wore it, but I'm awful glad to wearing purple and gold right now. Kids did a great job of being here all summer long. That in itself tells me they want to be successful," said Joe Drennon, Bobcats head football coach. It journey won't be easy. The Hallsville Bobcats are coming off a rough 2016 season where they only came out victorious twice.  "We can't control what's gone on it the past. What we got to do ...More >>

On Monday the Associated Press released its top 25 preseason poll for college football. And for the third straight year, Texas A&M didn't make the cut. Starting fast though and moving their way up the polls in recent seasons hasn't been the problem. In fact, the Aggies, who have over a dozen East Texans on the roster, were number four in the initial playoff rankings last year.
