LONGVIEW, TX (KLTV) - Assessing that conditions were safe, LISD schools stayed on normal schedule Friday.

"As long as kids are in a safe environment where its warm and they have food and education is going on then that's fine," said Brian Bowman, with LISD.

But early on, power outages began to affect street signals, and the campuses of Ware and South Ward Elementary. Both were closed and the students sent home.

"Once staff started arriving at the campus power started going out so we did shut down South Ward Elementary and Ware Elementary," said Bowman. "The kids actually showed up for school and we released them around 8:45."

Outages forced Pine Tree schools to bus 1st and 2nd graders to Pine Tree auditorium for lunch. Then, they were returned when power returned. Some LISD parents were angry that schools stayed on schedule and didn't make any announcements.

"Some parents wanted to know why we didn't send a phone message out that school was going to go on as planned or why we didn't post something on our website," said Bowman. "From the school districts standpoint, if we would have sent out a message to 8,300 students saying school's going to start at regular time today, we felt like that would have caused more confusion."

But, some parents took it in stride, understanding the snow creates a rare condition.

"I remember one year on Valentine's Day it snowed so this is really cool," said Adriane Fleet. "Parents can come get their child any day - that's a parents decision, and if a parent feels like it's the safest thing to have their child at home with them, we encourage them to do that."

Longview and Pine Tree schools let out at normal times Friday.
