TYLER, TX (KLTV) - As Old Man Winter pays  a visit to East Texas drivers need to be careful of slick roads. And, in case it does ice-up, TxDOT crews are out and about, ready to respond.

"We'll keep an eye on it all night long," said Larry Krantz, with the Department of Transportation. "We'll be driving the roads and taking a look at stuff and if we need to put trucks up there to put down some ice melt we'll do it."

It makes for beautiful scenery and so far, drivers are thankful it is melting on the roadways.

"It's kind of good to see the snow here long as it's not sticking," said Carol Harris, a driver. "I just came in from Dallas. [It's] a lot worse there...watching the truckers. You can't see behind them very well. Hadn't seen any accidents. No one off in the ditch. It got hard to see one time between the slush and the snow and the rain but other than that it's been fine."

Harris and her husband drove all the way in from Mississippi. She says it was smooth sailing getting to Texas, and, hopefully, getting out will be just as easy.

"I'm hoping it's not going to ice up tonight though and I'm not going to get stuck here for a week," she said.

TxDOT has another crew coming on Thursday night at 8pm to work overnight.

They say even in the slush, it could quickly turn deadly if drivers are not slowing down and paying attention.

"Keep the distance between the vehicle in front of you," said Krantz. "Keep a lot of space around you because even if you don't lose control there's going to be people around you that might."
