Lindale schools donate $1,700 to Red Cross for Haiti

Released by Lindale ISD:

LINDALE, TX (KLTV) - Thursday morning LISD administrators and students presented the Smith County Chapter of the American Red Cross with a check in the amount of $1,712.55 for Haiti recovery efforts.

The money was raised through "Hats for Haiti," a student developed concept.  Lindale High School freshman Erica Hernandez approached principal Donny Williams about a schoolwide fundraiser to support the recovery efforts in Haiti.  Erica's idea was to have students pay $1.00 to wear a hat to school on Friday, February 5.  Hats are normally not allowed under the LISD dress code.  Teachers also participated by paying $5.00 to wear jeans.

"I was thinking one night that while people in Haiti were trapped under rubble and fighting for their lives, I was warm and safe in my bed," Erica said.  "I wanted to do something to help."

The idea spread to other district campuses and Velma Penny Elementary and Lindale Primary School also participated.

"I am just amazed at the energy and enthusiasm of the young people of East Texas to raise $1,700 to help the people of Haiti whom they've never even met," American Red Cross Smith County Chapter Development Director Pat Shannon said.  "It really is amazing."
