Police stepping up patrols in East Texas

EAST TEXAS (KLTV) - Local law enforcement continues to beef up security around area churches.

The Longview fire and police departments are providing extra patrols at churches until the arsons stop. Some off-duty officers from the Tyler Police Department are even working part-time security details.

Patrols are also being stepped up during the evening and early morning hours, when many churches are not staffed.

"Of course, we have our laptops in our cars that we do all our reports on," said Officer Don Martin, with the Tyler Police Department. "Instead of going to a Wal-mart parking lot and parking and typing up a report, they're going to be parking at a church parking lot."

According to the Tyler PD, there are nearly 200 churches within in the city limits, so it is virtually impossible for officers to be at every one.

Churches are urged to staff their own security detail, and call the police immediately to report a crime or suspicious activity.
