SMITH COUNTY, TX (KLTV) - Members of Dover Baptist say they just spent several thousand dollars renovating their church and now it is all destroyed by fire. Though members are devastated, they are finding strength in their faith and by banding together.

The congregation had been trying to protect their church from this rash of fires, by installing cameras and putting bars up, but to no avail.

"Why? Why?" asked Shirley Valadez. "This is the Lord's house, and it's such a shame that somebody can be such an unbeliever."

"When we first visited here first thing we thought about was how friendly the people are," said Wilbur Callaway, a deacon. "And, we've been real happy here my wife and I and we're just shocked about this you know, you can't believe it."

"It's obviously Satan inspired," said Callaway. "Whoever is doing this, the devil is behind it all 'cause we're a successful church here and a beacon in the community."

It is a small country church filled with hard workers who raised thousands of dollars and spent countless hours renovating.

"It was almost like a brand new church and now we have to start over," said Callaway.

"Like when you fall off a horse, you gotta get up and get back on or you'll never get on him again," said Tom miller. "So you burn it down, we'll build it back."

In fact, that is already being planned by members. Conveniently, Shirley Valadez's husband is a builder.

"My husband was up almost all night designing," she said. "We're going to build up closer."

"All I can say is whoever did it I hope they got enjoyment out of it 'cause they're going to pay for it somewhere down the line," said Callaway. "God's not going to let them get away with this."

Fortunately, Dover Baptist Church is covered, as they had insurance. They are also grateful no one was injured.
