LONGVIEW, TX (KLTV) - He is the first African American astronaut to walk in space. Thursday, a lucky Longview elementary school got to meet him.

Former Astronaut Bernard Harris spoke to students at Jodie McClure Elementary School. Harris emphasized to the kids that math and science are the ways into space. He added that as long as you dream, the possibilities are endless.

"It was 15 years ago when I walked in space and it happened to be of course during Black History Month...and I think it is appropriate to be here in Longview to share with the kids my dream that became a reality," said Harris.

Dr. Harris has participated in two space shuttle flights. And, just in case you didn't know, he was born and raised in Temple, Texas.
