WILLS POINT, TX (KLTV) - The fire at Russell Memorial United Methodist Church in Wills Point was a blow to members of the congregation. Folks have been gathering all day Thursday, praying and leaning on each other for support.

Joanne Birdsong, who works in the daycare, told KLTV 7, "We were so close we could feel the flames and see them, and all you could do was cry, because your heart's broken."

The fire broke out just 30 minutes before children were supposed to arrive. Daycare director Debbie Vaughan says workers frantically scrambled to keep parents informed.

Debbie says she was devastated, but grateful no kids had arrived yet.

Lucy Hill lost her beloved church just days after losing her husband.

"My husband died on Tuesday and his funeral will be tomorrow. It was to be at the church but we'll do that at the funeral home," said Hill.

Despite this historic loss, church members are finding an amazing strength together in their faith.

Church members say they will be holding services in parts of the building that were not burned. As for the daycare building, it only suffered smoke damage, and church members say they hope to have it back open in a few days.
